In his energetic, funny, and intelligent memoir, Peter Coyote relives his 15-year ride through the heart of the counterculture - a journey that took him from the quiet rooms of privilege as the son of an East Coast stockbroker to the riotous life of political street theater and the self-imposed poverty of the West Coast communal movement known as The Diggers.

With this innovative collective of artist-anarchists who had assumed as their task nothing less than the re-creation of the nation's political and social soul, Coyote and his companions soon became power players. In prose both graphic and unsentimental, Coyote reveals the corrosive side of love that was once called "free"; the anxieties and occasional terrors of late-night, drug-fueled visits of biker gangs looking to party; and his own quest for the next high. His road through revolution brought him to adulthood and to his major role as a political strategist from radical communard to the chairman of the California Arts Council, from a street theater apprentice to a motion-picture star.

I had no idea that Coyote could write so well until I read this autobiography. Having a great interest and curiosity about the Sixties and San Francisco, hippies, bikers, druggies and the like, I enjoyed his insight as one who was there and lived through it. I was especially pleased to read his chapter devoted to William "Sweet William" Fritsch, the poet/Hells Angel that is featured in the movie, "Gimme Shelter". (He's the one that hops up on stage and has words with Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane). Ever since I saw the film many years ago, I have been very interested in Fritsch and Coyote apparently knew him well and admired him. Peter and William were also members of the Diggers before Fritsch became a member of the Hells Angels, the group that started the Free Store and gave out free food to hungry hippies in the Panhandle. Interestingly, Fritsch was the boyfriend of the controversial poetess, Lenore Kandel and a poet in his own right. It would be wonderful if Coyote has access to Fritsch's works and would publish them for us all to enjoy and ponder. A few of them do appear in this book. Many years after reading this book, I became friendly with someone who knew William very well and was to learn more about both him and Coyote before William's passing in 2015. I enjoyed Peter's chapters on living out on the commune as well, something that these days seems so idealistic and sappy in a sense because of how our society has moved since then.
In all, this book gives an insightful and seemingly honest account of a life lived in the counter-culture of Northern California during the 1960's. A great read for those interested in that time and place in American history.

Sleeping Where I Fall A Chronicle (Audible Audio Edition) Peter Coyote Audible Studios Books Reviews

I've read other reviewers taking Peter Coyote to task for writing what they seem to think is just a self-congratulatory puff piece to satisfy his own ego. I disagree. Not once in the book did I ever see him claim that the existence he and his friends lived was the 'only' way or the 'best' way, nor did he try to make himself out to be some kind of faultless angel who never made a mistake. He simply told, in as straightforward and unembellished a way as possible, what happened in his own personal experience, good and bad, and described the process that took him from one stage of existence to another. That kind of honesty takes courage few of us can claim to have in any level of our lives.
And anyone who was as heavily into drugs as he was to have survived at all, not to mention completely turning their life around and becoming successful in their own chosen field, should be congratulated. I've known enough people in my own experience who didn't, and I grieve for them to this day.
I, for one, am very glad he wrote this book. In 1964 I was only twelve years old and have always felt a bit cheated that I was just too young to have been a part of what I felt even then to be a special and perhaps irreplaceable time. Reading "Sleeping Where I Fall" has given me a sense of almost having been there myself which I've never gotten from any other work on the era in quite the same way.
Thank you for writing this memoir, Peter. I do sincerely appreciate it.
I found out about this book by joining Peter Coyote's Fan Page. I had no idea this book existed, I just thought he was strictly an actor. This book is well written and anything you ever wanted to know about Mr. Coyote is in the book. It goes from his early life into his hippie days with his involvement with the Diggers. I had no Idea about his risky behavior ; but we are talking about life in the 60's. I'm just glad he was able to turn is life around and become a successful actor. I recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Peter Coyote; and if your not you will be after reading Sleeping Where I Fall.

Thanks,

Beautifully written chronicle of the 60's in the Bay area and beyond. It captures not only the idealism but also the naivety of that era. The limitless possibilities of the hippie culture and the youthful exuberance that were endemic of the time period. At first glance I thought it was a bit too "wordy" and that the author was zooming all of us.... but after almost giving up I am very glad that I did not and stuck it out. It does not preach or romanticize but gives a pretty clear picture of how we lived and came through (some of us) fairly unscathed with our idealism if not still abundant but at least still fairly intact. A really good read. Thank You to Peter Coyote!
One of the very best, by far, of memoirs about the Sixties and early 70s. (I think I've read them all.)
Coyote is intelligent, articulate, funny, compassionate -- there's not much else to ask for in any writer.
And he really tries to be fair. He's actually quite a good writer too. I am close to his age, and lived through
a lot of similar experiences, so I felt somewhat as if I was reading the thoughts of a friend.
But all of us, of that age, of those times, felt a bit like friends, and still do.
It's a wonderful book.
If you want to remember the times, or learn about them for the first time from a really good guide who you can trust,
read this book. I recommend it very highly.
